Lady Godiva was around in the 11th century, a noblewoman married to Leofric, the Earl of Mercia and Lord of Coventry, she did help found a Benedictine monastery in Coventry I do know.     The naked ride through Coventry was a myth historians now say btw......the story started to be told 100 years after she died and Peeping Tom only came into the story in the 16th century.     Though as I say she did help found a Benedictine monastery in Coventry so she could have had something to do with your Convent,       Of course that's where Nuneaton get it's name from, built on the site of a Priory where Nuns lived.

Oh yes Bond those trifles are really yummy.....I just love them.

Lovely to see you Vicky and your trifle
I think this convent that we live on had something to do with lady godiva I know the church is, I do know Ive heard people say it was a sealed order and nobody saw these Nuns
I must look it up one day, a friend who is dead now did take some very grafic photos when they were burning and pulling in down

David's Dad wrote down the history of the family his side going back to his great grandparents.....he did it so that the family would know all the history, it was an eye opener, he didn't white wash it. Interesting though. Laura likes to hear stories about the family.

Really interesting Margaret......I just wish I'd done something before my Gran died, all the family photos, medals, caps  etc....and of course my Mum's necklace ...went missing after she died.   confused2

Bond not only Nuns lived in Convents you know,  sometimes women who'd just lost their husbands lived there, paying bed & board for years sometimes these women had children.

I know Carole......you & Margaret could have taken me shopping.

Susan's on the train heading home......they're under the River Severn at the moment, going all round the houses all because of this derailment.

thank you ,dear friends.

I love history, I am always
amazed at the history of our little Island.
I began to discover a lot about Coventry
from my Gran Hitchins when I popped
round for a cup of tea after classes at
the new Art school.
(next door to the original Lanchester
tech) It was just straight up Priory Row
on my bike.
We tend to forget that America is only 240 years
old as a united country(it explains a lot!)
while UK has a rich if bloody history going back
over 2,000 years!
I won't claim to be an expert but love sharing stories
about my family connections. Learned a lot from the
census records which go back a long way. I am still
connecting the dots about them.

Still fighting the ants here but I think when the weather
cools down a bit more they will stop invading.
I am still catching up on little jobs like the regulator wall
clock in the Kitchen which needs a fresh battery.
I still have to put away the card table and clean out the ice
chests before they go back in the garage.

Now I need to track down the letter about the land as I will
need to show it to Brian to get his take on it. Its here on
the coffee table somewhere. If you have seen the man who juggles
6 plates at the same time and keeps having to run round to keep
them spinning you will understand what my life is like sometimes.

OK OK so where is the UK contingent
BOND where did YOU scoot off to then confused2

And looks like Vicky is off with Susan ,maybe returning her
to Tamworth to catch the choo choo back home

That reminds me of when I was last home  after seeing Gil
in 1995 and your trains were on slow down or strike or some
such madness and I was trying to get down to see my sister
Dawn in Chichester and was diverted to some rinky dink town
and her and Paul my BIL had to come get me ,it was a hot summer
as well and I was near PANIC MODE being alone lugging my suitcases
etc and never been down there before ,well where this train was taking me

That is how David travels when he comes up here as even though
he does drive and has his  :driver:  license ,he does not own a car
instead rents one if needs be but living in New York which is a NIGHTMARE
to drive/park its probably better he does not
He also uses Uber to bring him to our house from the train station
as I always drive him back to catch his train ...

Well its REALLY a nice day temps at 78f with low dew point and humidity
numbers only in the 60's so not bad at all for the middle of September

Got my  shopper  and as normal spent MORE than I should have
but its all good would rather have supplies in than run out and not able to
get out to replenish
Have a piece of Eye of round defrosting that will get cooked tomorrow
Chelsea as I said will be here at 1pm
and so have a few hours to relax

Back later ....cor could do with a LARGE L & L

Morning Bond ,going to be a lovely day here
sunny and around 80f ,before the remains
of Florence gets up here late tomorrow night
and hangs around on Tuesday then it will be
back to sunny weather in the high 70's
for at least the rest of next week

I have a bad habit Marge of always being organized
in "some area's " like at work when we would plan anything
like a get together or the bowling banquet ,they always
came to me confused2
Sometimes I get into trouble doing it as I get TOO involved funnytvprog
Luckily Gil only had two large bills in his name so it was
easy taking care of them ,and I had been trying to square MINE away
before he passed as I knew the day would come when I would lose
HIS money from here {even though it was less than $500 mth}
and that his UK pension $$ would change which is where the bulk
of his income came from from all the years he worked back there
where as its the opposite here where MY SS pension was the larger
as I have worked HERE since 1970

As Bond says though you ARE a walking piece of history with your
family ,its a pleasure to know you and call you my friend
As I have said many times its too bad us three {Vicky thee and I}
live so FAR apart as I think we would have been fast mates

Today I must go to the shopper first even though Blaine will be off
next week I have a "short" list of things to get like a case of water ,cat food
milk bread bleach V8 onions and narna's
Then Chelsea said she would be here at 1pm to take me to the UK Gourmet
store so I can DROOL all over the goodies ,and bring home some pork pies
and REAL ENGLISH sausages {Gil' will be }

I would REALLY like to tidy the back grass before we get the rain Tuesday
so may do that early tomorrow morning ...so there is my schedule

Marge you have Ian watching over your shoulder ,I seem to have my grandson
as if it was up to HIM ALL the $$ from the insurance would have been
invested /saved
I told him that his grandad did not believe in banks and the only reason he
had one in his name was so the UK and USA SS could deposit his money
otherwise he liked to keep it in his "white envelope"
David's answer "that is silly banks are good " Rolling Eyes

Ah well must away the clock is a ticking

MORNING VICKY ....morning Marge .... santa Bond

Good For you Carole!
It does take time to get it all
squared away. I still have
some things that are in
peters name but they are mainly
his donations to charity or memberships
in things such as AARP or our local
Public TV station PBS.
Only got the electric bill left and the
property taxes on our house and land
now in his name on my job description.
Its all on auto pay
anyway so the only paying I need to do
is the gardener every month and the
dentist twice a year.
AARP is good up until Sept 2020!
Ian and I go over all this every time he
comes over with his little list of items to
lecture me about. tongue tongue

The Blue Coat school near Holy Trinity
was for girls born "the other side of the
blanket" in polite terms.
My Great grand mother was a Governor
of the girls school way back. They wore
Wimples like some of the Nuns do today.
They learned how to sew and cook an
keep house and attended church just about
every day.
I don't remember where the boys school
was at that time. they all learned to read
and write and do math and they would
be placed in an apprenticeship at about
12 or 13.
Jacob Caldicott was then a silk weaver
but was sextant and clerk of Holy Trinity
and his wife was a Governor of the school.
There should be a brass fancy plaque
in between the alter and the vestry door
recording his long service to the church
who died at the grand old age of 80
something. They also lived at #4 Priory
Row. I think they were middle class when
it meant something as they furnished the house
with expensive furniture which was divided
amongst my gran and older brothers when her
mother died. each got a room of furniture
to start married life with.

I think many of these " religious " fathers
were apt  to take advantage of the young virgins
who went into a nunnery ?(spelling)
Look at all the priests now a days being found out that
from DECADES ago have been sexually abusing both
girls and boys

So you have a coffin under your fish pond Bond ,did you
not report it so they could relocate the poor soul ..

Marge I am slowly tying up ends here paying up any bills
all but my car payment that finishes next Sept anyway
so figured let it run its course as it will increase my credit score
I did though pay an extra $1000 off the balance so it will finish a little earlier

David is coming up next Friday to present his findings in where
I should put the remaining $$$ from the insurance money

I did open a savings account at my bank with a small amount
that I hope to add to over my remaining years so feel
I am in charge

I have bought the dryer fixed my truck and bought a new
Duvet and cover ,so do not think I have squandered the money
on un necessary items

My next project is the spare room

Heard from Linda the new  grandbaby was released
home yesterday so her daughter was running
for formula ,and that it was rainy and wndy but they
had no major flooding they live 4 hours away from
the coast line where Wilmington got clobbered with Florence

On the same hand we would be in bad shape had it hit here
in Bridgeport as we are only 15 mins from Long Island Sound  Sad

Ok time for my shower speak tomorrow

The willow pattern platters came from the old Blue
Coat School next door when they moved.
Gran also had a set of blue willow tea service
which I found out a few other grand children have
in memory of gran like I do.

Sorry for the delay but Ian just called to check up
if I had done anything about the parcel of land
out in the desert which I have wanted to sell for
a long time since Peter retired in 1995!
He kept thinking that someday it might be worth
something. (its not).
Ian has asked 2 friends (one an attorney , the other
is my tax man Brian) who can point me in the right
direction of a broker who deals with these things.
Ian is like a terrier with a bone, he won't leave
it alone. he says its up to me but he wants me to
read him the letter so he can take over and tell
Brian and Ed to nudge me to act right now.
I'm still catching up now I feel up to doing more.
It comes and goes in stages so have to take
advantage when I can.

Good evening ladies, well lots of great history there Marge yet again
Swords and blue plates theres history in them there walls
Just watching the best of Strickly come dancing
Some fantastic clips
You all know our house is built on the site of a Covent and we used to have a black cat with a white face sit O the the fence and just look at you you could throw boots at him he would just sit and look at you, somebody in the houses by us said a Nun type shape would kneel in the corner of the lounge
There was a grave yard in the Covent grounds and when they moved the bodies there was child bodies found there, so not all virgins went in or the old father when he went in had a good time,
When I dug out the fish pond I got down about two and a half feet and the spade bangers on wood heavy wood and it was don't know go any deeper its a coffin lid
Who put the lights out

that your not using to keep the leaves and
I am sure sap on ?

Blaine just left with his new bike on his new
car bike rack to ride in the park
That's part of what he spent his $$$ on i have
besides getting repairs done on his car
Need a nap be back

My gran said I looked like Paullett
Godard as a teenager (an old time
movie star).
I have been told by others that I resemble
my gran as I grew older.
I was just so happy finding the photos that
I had to share them. I do know that my
cousin Jean has a bunch that include the
for runner of the head shots that actors do
today, in an album of one of my great
uncles which Peter managed to copy when
we were on a trip one time.
We made a collage of them which hangs on
the wall.
I also have pictures of another great uncle
inside the campanile with his foot on a bell
rope which is posted on a family tree on
Ancestry site.
I am going to insist that the kids donate all
the Coventry related photos to the Herbert
Museum after putting them on a flash drive.
As you said ,it is part of our City's history.
My great grand father , Thomas Chapman
was sextant and clerk at Holy Trinity for
many years while his day job was engraving
watch cases and small items like snuff boxes.
He was involved when they demolished Butcher
Row in the 30s and found some skulls of they think
soldiers who were executed or died in battle who
got a quick mass burial(it would have originally
been part of the church yard of Holy trinity) .
Thomas took one home and scared his children and
grandchildren with it. In fact The kids were sure the
house as haunted so would not sleep until he chased
the spirits out waving one of the swords you see !
David McGrory wrote the story in a book called
"Haunted Coventry" , on Page 16 is a photo I had
of Thomas Chapman actually at his bench in Priory
Row engraving something. He got the story out of one
of the early newspapers. I might have this confused
with another of his books on Coventry but I have the
"haunted" version in front of me so I know that picture
is in there as we let him copy it when we met him in
St Mary's Hall one afternoon . He was kind enough to
sign it for us as he credited it to us in the book.
Thomas also had a photo of himself in full regalia holding
the skull which I also have a copy of on my wall. It took
me a long time (until I was a teenager ) to work out it was
out of a Shakespeare play with the grave diggers holding
a skull and saying the line "Alas, poor Yoric, I knew him
Horatio " . That's how I knew he was also a grave digger
at night! I told you I had really unusual relatives!
I have been so careful not to offend any of my relatives who
are a bit more reserved than I am but why not share them
now and not wait for some kid down the line who throws them out
in the bin! We lost so much history of the house when it was cleared
out after Grans death. Not an historian in the bunch!
The swords and guns were a collectors dream!
Well, enough of that,

The ants made it in again last night so had to get it all cleaned
up before I went to bed. This time they had just made it to the
cats dishes but they are still coming in at the same place and I
took a flash light and a magnifying glass to see if I could find the
ant trail but no sign anywhere outside. I bought more Windex
cleaner and outside ant spray so I am ready for them!

I slept in this morning after all that effort last night.
Its another day of getting everything put away and possibly
getting one of the cars vacuumed out ready for the car wash.
The damn leaves from the tree are getting to me and the drive
way is buckling even more from the roots, That tree has to go!
Get the oldies on the radio and I am away. TTFN

Your nans house sounds just like the
first rent Gil and I had Vicky ,exactly
we had to go out the kitchen door turn left and the only
Loo was at the end of the kitchen ,then a coal bunker
after we left and bought MY nans house ,they started
knocking the wall between the walk in larder and outside loo
down and made it into a bathroom
I remember you saying about your nans earring

Oh I'm only seeing your grandson David Carole......I'll have to use David's iPad.

That was like ours when I was growing up, a victorian house which my Gran had bought when I was 18 months old, having lived with my great uncle (Grans brother) until then, to go up stairs you had to go through a door set in the back room wall, turn right on the landing and we had one bedroom,  turn left and you had my bedroom, straight through my bedroom we had a box room (where this cobbler had hung himself and one day I heard these heavy footsteps coming up the stairs and into my bedroom and then into the box room where they stopped....I sat on my bed following the sound until they stopped and then I was off that bed and charging down the stairs to the front door where my Gran was nattering across the road with a neighbour ) and the door to the attic was also in my bedroom  downstairs we had the front room, back room and kitchen....with the loo in the yard, and the coal shed next door to the loo. .      Oh that house was haunted alright, though so was this house by a little boy until we had the house extended/altered and this was a new build so it was the land which was haunted not the house,   3 houses in this road where haunted, not sure if the other 2 still are but this isn't now.        I know for certain that there are such things as ghosts.   I saw my gran a couple of days after she died and where on the 3rd step I found the back of her earring which she'd lost when she'd come for Christmas but there it was gleaming on the 3rd step, the step she'd got to when I had seen her walking up towards me looking happy.....this was the middle of July.   so for 7 months the back of her earring had been missing and yet the step she'd vanished on was the missing part of the earring.    I've still got it.   No imagination there.

Glad you're happy with your dryer.

We had to pick Susan up from Tamworth, she came by train but because of a derailment at Coleshill trains were not coming into Nuneaton stopping at Tamworth, so had to go and pick her up.....will be taking her back to Tamworth to get her train tomorrow. She's gone off to meet up with some friends so borrowed my car.

This is the other picture Marge posted of
her Grandmother in her Priory Row cottage
isn't it great ,and WHO does Marge  look like

Vicky our first rent on Bolingbroke Rd was scary upstairs
it had the  dark narrow stairs leading up from the back living room
no lights then two bedrooms and a long room that sat on top
of the kitchen ,where I was told someone had died there
it would have made a great babies bedroom but I was too scared
to stay in it as it had no over head light and was full of junk left
by the previous tenant ,so the door was always SHUT TIGHT

Of course I KNOW its all our own imagination ,and I have a GREAT
one that can put the WILLIES up myself funnytvprog funnytvprog

Well using the new dryer ,its ALL computerized like the washer
and plays a tune after its finished a cycle ,I get a bit uptight using
new appliances until I get used to them ,like this one said
I had to do a "BLOCKAGE TEST" before using to make sure its
vented OK ,thankfully our venting ,according to the dryer was OK
(always my worry that there could be a fire as you can only clean so FAR
into the duct that vents outside } confused2

Text the landlady asking her when she was coming for the THREE months
rent money orders ,she said by the weekend   err would
that not be by Friday then confused2 I text her back saying I would
only be at home this afternoon ....her trouble is she NEVER calls to
say she is coming ,I told her to give me her address and I would mail
them but she answered that she would be over

OK be back later

run run

Oh yes I remember Quatermass ....my great aunts best friend the actress Barbara Shelley was in "Quatermass and The Pit"   what always makes me smile in horror films is how they never put the lights on.....go walking about in the dark, as if you would   funnytvprog .   The Body Snatchers scared me also Carole.      I did listen on the radio to "The Black Museum"  when I was about 12.....scary but I loved it, all about Scotland Yard's Crime Museum....my Gran would tell me to go to bed, which I did...but sometimes I'd sit at the top of the stairs listening to as much as I could.....of course that meant I was listening to it in the dark, we didn't have electricity on the stairs or landing. OR the box room or the attic, both were off my bedroom.    It was a spooky house anyway.

Sorry to hear about Blaine's job......yes the more you do the more they want you to do but with no increase of wage.

run  VICKY
I thought you might be busy today with Susan coming

Morning Bond ,yes sad when people lose their lives
the mother and her 8 mth old baby who died had a tree fall on their
house ,the firemen got her husband out and then they all knelt
and ,was very moving
Not sure exactly WHEN that happened I KNOW it was Wilmington
that got wind gusts 105mph ,but it was not raining or flooded
where the firemen were kneeling crying
They say its the flooding that they are most concerned over
and it could take WEEKS to subside as all the rain from inland
that washes down rivers and streams to the coast line and into the sea
are now having nowhere to go so its all backing up as Florence pushes
inland Mad
Have to text Linda today and ask how her daughter partner and new baby
are I know the baby was in  a hospital in Charlotte but do not think
THEY LIVED there ,but looking at the news the flooding is reaching even up that
far inland

Boy I never saw THAT movie guys ,never liked scary or spooky
films ,does any one remember Quatermas ? where a "THING"
from space takes over humans and they grow vegetation
over the humans they took over  ,you see it crawling out from their
sleeves Shocked ,we lived in the brand new built houses on Deedmore RD
then I was 11/12 ,had NIGHTMARES and did not want to go upstairs
to my room to bed as it spooked me so much
Never have liked scary things and Gil was the opposite ,if I heard
the music to such on TV I would yell at him to TURN IT OFF crying

Anywho latest news is Blaine got put on a weeks furlough so will
be off next week and have to apply for unemployment ,lack of work
He said they are down to only 10 workers in the place ,and the guy
who ran the presses has left ,bought a house in Florida ,so his
foreman said Blaine will have to run THAT machine plus the Tumblers
he runs now ,only thing is the presses get a higher wage than what
Blaine gets now ,and he told him ,so the foreman said well you will have
to prove yourself in order to get an increase ,Blaine got
and told him you forget I was a MACHINIST for over 15 yrs and BUILT
machines ,something his brain NEVER forgot after he had the aneurysm
So we shall see what happens
But a common thing over here to have one person pick up another job and get
paid the SAME rate nono

I will change Marges photo later today and put the other one on
and BOY you can SEE who SHE looks like

Morning.......Laura's been dropped off.

Oh I saw a TV film about that Margaret, donkey's years ago.....aliens visited us, can't remember just what they looked like now but they certainly weren't human, the female star of the film bumped into them and of course screamed, her co-star ran in to see what she was screaming about, called the police and the police called the army, who turned up *straight away* .....the aliens ran off and got back into their ship....when the aliens got back to their planet they told the media how they'd wandered into this building and saw this thing, must have been a female the way it screamed but oh was it ugly, with long things growing out of it's head, (the very attractive female had lovely long hair) then he went on how this other *thing* came in to seem to protect her, and how more things turned turned up with strange sort of weapons ......as I said it was years ago but I've never forgot the gist of it.

Great photo Margaret......as Bond said "History"

Good evening ladies, I always think of a time with Mrsbs dad when people talk about aliens, it was a clear summer night and the milky way really was bright and clear, we look ed up at the sky and I said all those millions of stars are all suns just like our sun and they will have planets around them like are own, he looked at me and said sometimes you take a load of cobblers,
Another life another age
Last drinks for the night so then it's off to bed

Marge the way Trump is acting I can ACTUALLY
BELIEVE that funnytvprog funnytvprog
Let me know when you post your picture BTW

They said on the Alien program they have been receiving
a signal from some planet a billion miles away in some other
Galaxy ,so I would not be surprised Vicky if there were
others out there somewhere , might not LOOK like us though

They also said our Government is hiding facts about an object
that has been in orbit LONG BEFORE ANYONE put anything into space
they call it the Black Knight ,these people believe its an alien
object ,guess they do not want mass hysteria if they told the public the truth
Interesting subject though

Watching the damage from Florence a woman and her baby killed
when a tree fell on their house ...its the flooding as well so BAD
saying now it will not end till SUNDAY
Watching the Red Cross volunteers from our State and Save the Children
that are headquartered in Western CT

OK showered washed my hair so away I shall go

Susan coming up for the WEEKEND Vicky .....OK guess we will see
your Monday then confused2 Sad

Have you ever thought that we might be the aliens
they all warn us about?
Maybe there are spy's among us telling other
planets to stay away from the crazy planet
we live on.

Not sure about aliens Carole, though why should Earth be the only planet with living beings confused2 .

BTW Susan's coming up for the weekend.

Good afternoon Marge ,of course I will copy it
for you when I go into fb again
As to the site saying 2014 that's because Malc
does no longer delete our weekly chit chat
after he turned the place over to us to run
making us all administration officials

funnytvprog

I also saw them warning people that if they
stayed not to expect first responders to come rescue
them and yet there are responders doing just that ...

Yes some of the coastline here in Connecticut is still rebuilding
homes that were damaged with hurricane Sandy ,the risk you take
building right at waters edge

Have not ventured out today
Back later

I don't know about the times but my screen says
I am still in 2014!
Been watching the news for the latest on the damage
and rescues taking place in NC.

So many people ignored the command to leave even
when the Governor told them that once it hit, they were
on their own if they stayed put. No power or clean water
for maybe days or weeks.

Some I know would not leave because they had animals
and were told that the shelters would not take the animals.
Others did not believe that it would be as bad as forecasted.
(mostly people who had been through other hurricanes and
felt it was being blown out of proportion).
That's what happened with Katrina in New Orleans.
The upper east coast are still making repairs from Sandy!

The meeting went well last night, our newbie Betty lead for the
first time, its all laid down in the leaders book but it takes
guts to tell your story to a bunch of strangers.
I talked with her afterwards and told her about the
stuff we went through when Melanie was married to the first
"Jim" , lots of threats and drama and chaos and all the while
knowing that she was being abused without her telling me.
It is very freeing though to get stuff off your chest that you
have held in for possibly years.
One of our slogans is "Secrets make you sick".
Even if you can only write it all down and burn it afterwards
because you think its too terrible to share, its healthier in
the long run. It sounds very simplistic but its amazing how
it works. That is what Melanie's Jim #2 is dealing with right
now in his program. I am still in touch with him but do not
try to influence him in any way. Its his journey and he needs
to face his history and put it behind him. I just send love and
encouragement.

You will never guess what happened to me yesterday, I tripped
over a box in this room and out fell a whole bunch of black and white
photos including an extra copy of the photo I was trying to find the
wedding album for! So now I have a good B&W print to have
enlarged and framed to hang on the wall.
I also found a photo of my mothers parents at a Coventry Carnival
in about 1926, they were in a group in fancy dress and won first
prize! They also had collection boxes to raise money for C&W
hospital as they needed to enlarge it to cope with all the casualties
from the first world war. These are the ones that lived in Priory Row.
I can post it on FB if Carole will be so kind as to share it.

Been to "Woodlands" had hot sausage roll and chips, David had fish, chips & mushy peas....though we'd only gone to get the large batches which they sell, very much like the ones I used to buy when David & I were first married and still living in Lancashire, we used to have them on a Saturday night with Lancashire cheese.   It was our Saturday night routine.

Ok seems I was the first on the delivery truck
They have been ,dropped it inside and gone
Spencer unhooked the old one and took it into the
newly uncluttered garage until I see if anyone wants it
(Seems Carmen does not have the room for a washer/dryer
otherwise I would have given it to her )

Anyway Spencer has gone back to bed for a while

Watching the hurricane one town near where it's coming in
has already gotten 30" of rain and the bad thing is it's going to hang
around till Saturday
